FAQ

Do you have more products available than what is shown on gamestation.net?
Yes, we do.  Launching thousands of products is a slow process, and we are still working on it.  If you don't see what you want, or if the picture is not yet up, please don't hesitate to call or check back later.

What are the different sizes of dice available, and what is standard (normal)?
Dice come in many different shapes and sizes.  The "normal" dice, as in Monopoly, is a 16mm, 6-sided dice, opaque white with black pips.

Most dice are manufactured overseas where the standard unit of measure is the millimeter (mm).  Here is the conversion to inches.

5 mm = 2/10 inch, or about the size of a match-stick head
12mm = 1/2 inch
16mm = 5/8 inch, the “normal” dice for boardgames
19mm = ¾ inch, standard casino-sized dice
25mm = 1inch
35mm = 1.4 inch
50 mm = 2 inches
75 mm = 3 inches
100 mm = 4 inches

There are dice much larger and smaller than these common sizes available, so please carefully read titles and descriptions to ensure you are getting exactly what you want.  If you aren't good with measurements, don't hesitate to get out a ruler!

What is the difference between translucent and opaque?
Translucent means you can see through the dice, opaque means you cannot see through the dice.

How do dice get their names?
A black dice with white dots (pips) may be called Black w/ White.  If a second color isn't specified, than it typically will have white pips.  Again, look closely at the picture if the description & title aren't clear.

Isn't an individual dice called a die?
Not necessarily.  It is quite common to use “dice” when referring to just one.  In the context of our descriptions, we have multiple units of the same part for sale, therefore we have “dice” for sale, although they are typically sold individually.  If they are sold in pairs, sets or groups, the description will reflect this.  You should assume that you are ordering one die, unless the description says otherwise.

What materials are dice made of?
Polyurea plastics and acrylics, unless they are described differently.  We also sell dice made of wood, foam, metals, and precious stones.

What are the different configurations/shapes of dice?
Commonly, to save time & space, “dX" is used in place of “a dice with X number of sides”.  Here are the configurations we sell here at Gamestation.
d3 = 3-sided dice; d4 = 4-sided dice;  d5 = 5-sided diced; d6 = 6-sided dice;  d8 = 8-sided dice;  d10 = 10-sided dice; d12 = 12-sided dice; d14, d16, d20, d24, d36, d50 and d100

What is the difference in round, square or precision-edged dice?
Round-edged dice will tumble better than square-edged dice.  Square-edged have a much sharper corner, but are not  perfectly balanced.  Precision-edged dice are cut precisely and should be perfectly balanced, and are commonly referred to as Casino Dice.

Why are similar dice called by different names?

There are several different dice manufacturers, and each on uses their brand-specific names for their products.  Here are some terms that may need explanation.  Take a close look at the picture when the description doesn't make sense to you.

Chessex Vortex = marbleized translucent (white as 2nd color) (translucent plastics, but so heavily colored that it may appear opaque at times)
Chessex Gemini = metallic swirl of colors, opaque
Chessex Festive = marbleized, but with more colors involved and an added sheen
Chessex Cirrus = marbleized, looks just like Vortex (see above)
Chessex Velvet = injected with 2 colors, but without the swirl pattern, which gives it a more uniform color with a sheen
Chessex Phantom = marbleized with 3 colors instead of 2, opaque
Chessex Lustrous = marbleized with 2 to 3 colors with a glittery finish, lighter colors may be translucent
Chessex Leaf = marbleized with a 2-color injection, with the second color being metallic
Chessex Mother-of-Pearl = opaque dice with pearl sheen
Chessex Scarab = marbleized, secondary color is another shade of primary color instead of white, which results in a more uniform look
Chessex Nebula = colored translucent, injected with a swirl of the same color
Chessex Borealis = translucent with a glitter fill

Koplow Two-tone = speckled  (speckled is a primary color with specks of the secondary color)
Koplow's other types are self-explanatory – opaque, translucent, marbleized and pearl.

Crystal Caste Ice Cream – marbleized opaque
We don't carry a lot of Crystal Caste at this time, but we do have the popular Dwarven Stones, which are made of metals or precious stones.

Gamescience Gem = translucent
