Description:
As card games go, this one is quite revolutionary. Perhaps its oddest feature is that you cannot rearrange your hand, as you need to play the cards in the order that you draw them. The cards are colorful depictions of beans in various descriptive poses, and the object is to make coins by planting fields (sets) of these beans and then harvesting them. To help players match their cards up, the game features extensive trading and dealmaking. Strategy and Fun! This great card game is about planting, trading, and selling beans - 11 kinds of beans -this English version includes all the cards from the original game and the first expansion-. Players try to collect large sets of beans to sell for gold. There is limited growing space and always new beans to plant. To avoid planting unwanted beans, players trade them to other players who want them for their bean fields. -ages 10+- 2-7 players

Wonderful for groups!Jun 16, 2010 What does it take to be a successful bean farmer? It may not be as hard as you think! With some creative strategy, a little luck of the draw, and the right friends in Beanland, you could be raking in the dough. Planning ahead, scarcity, and public relations all come into play in this fast paced game that is sure to quickly become a favorite!
As a successful bean farmer, it's important that you plant the right beans. Of eleven bean varieties, you can only grow two at a time. This means for each bean planted, other beans in your hand must find their own homes. This is where the other farmers come into play: your persuasive skills will quickly be put to the test as you convince other players to take your unwanted beans, and attempt to talk them into giving you their own beans. Negotiations are fierce as popular beans are put up for auction, with everyone competing to grow the most profitable crops, and ultimately to gain the most coins and win the game.
I first played Bohnanza while 30,000 feet in the air on my return from our honeymoon in Tucson. The rules of the game are very straight-forward; in the time it took to reach the Portland airport, we had already played the two-player version several times (which is nearly as fun as with more players). I was so fond of Bohnanza that I introduced it to my family the following month, and they absolutely loved it. Of all the games we own, Bohnanza is by far the most popular with my family. Even a recent Thanksgiving was not complete without a hearty round of Bohnanza!
I would highly recommend this game to others who are looking for a good time with friends. It is not so strategic as to lose the average person, but winning does require skill and planning. Its clever concepts and artistic illustrations can be enjoyed by even the most disinterested gamer. I have thoroughly enjoyed this game and think it will be a classic in our household for many years to come.

Wonderful little card game for many players!Jun 03, 2010 I truly enjoy this trading card game if I can get more than 3 people to play. It is fairly simple to learn after you go a few rounds. It kind of reminds me of Catan a little bit in it's trading phase, but without all the strategic depth of placing bits on a board. The concept of having to keep your cards in the order you received them was new to me, but it is what makes the game so fun. It forces you to trade or donate cards, so you can arrange your hand to maximize your bean fields for money. The pace of the game is fairly quick so long as fellow players don't get too deep in thought.
I believe it plays better the more people you have. We tried it with 3, and it was very hard compared to the having more. I can see why you need all 3 bean fields when you only play 3. So, basically, get a lot of people together when you play this game!
Bean planting with a strategyMay 06, 2010 This game was first introduced to me by a friend. At first, the idea of bean planting was silly, but as you start playing and getting into the game, it's actually really fun! You soon realize that it takes strategy to gain more money so you can lead. It was so fun that I decided to buy my own set.
The Meat is in the tradingApr 09, 2010 In Bohnanza, which you should play with 3 or more, you have a handful of cards that you have to keep in order, and you have to plant the first card (and your second, if you want) in one of your two bean fields in front of you. Bean fields can only have one type of bean and there are a wide variety of beans in the game. The goal is to collect a bunch of a couple varieties of beans, as the more you collect, the more money you get when you harvest and sell them. You always start your hand by planting one or two bean cards, so if you're about to start your turn and you're holding a wax bean and your bean field contains a row of blue beans and a row of chili beans, you have to harvest (i.e., get rid of) either the blue beans or the chili beans.
If you have 3 blue beans in that row and you need at least 4 to collect a dollar, and you only have 1 bean in the chili beans row, then the rules state that you have to harvest the row that has two or more cards. That'd be the blue beans. With 3 blue beans on the table and you need 4 to collect a dollar, you're going to have to harvest those blue beans and get absolutely NOTHING for them. Nice going!
What should you have done? You should've got rid of that damn wax bean in the last trading round, or the trading round before that!
After planting, you draw two cards face-up and you have the option of keeping those cards (and then planting them immediately), or trading (or just giving away) those cards, and any from your hand, to those willing to take those cards. That's where you needed to get rid of your wax bean! And that's where you should've tried to trade that wax bean for a blue bean, so you would've had 4 blue beans in your blue bean row, and you would've then been able to collect at least a coin come harvest time!
For three bucks, you can buy a third bean row. Is it worth it? That's up to you. Scoring is often pretty tight but your score might be that high because you have the luxury of having that third bean field.
When your turn is over draw three cards, put them in the hand in the order you drew them, then drink a glass of water and figure out what you need to trade away out of your hand, and what you want for it.
If you don't trade well or if you try to screw over your opponents, you'll probably not do too well in the trading game. But you will have a lot of:
"What are you gonna give me for this blue bean?"
"I've got nothing to give you"
"Then you're not getting it"
"Fine, then plant it yourself. Looks like you'll have to harvest early"
"Anybody else want this blue bean?"
"See?"
"See what? I don't mind planting it!"
"THEN DO IT!"
"FINE, I WILL!"
"NO WAIT! I'll give you a green bean for it."
"Fine. And you're a sucker, cause I would've given it to you for nothing."
There is some luck of the draw to this game obviously, but there's also a good deal of careful planning, weighing your trade-offs, and good trading that make this game a lot of interactive fun.
I don't know if it's pricey for a card game, but what I'm paying for is board game fun and this baby delivers! Highly recommended to anybody.
As for learning the game, I recommend playing a couple hands as you're reading the rules. The rules are very brief and when you play a hand while reading through the rules, you can very quickly pick up the idea of what you're supposed to be doing.
Games I love include Dominion, Agricola, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, and Alhambra. This one ranks right up there with all of them, and I'm looking forward to playing it again tonight.
One of our favorite games!Apr 02, 2010 We love playing this game! Therefore, we taught it to several groups of friends. Each group enjoyed the game thoroughly and asks to play it when they come to our house. Several people have even bought the game so they could share it with other friends. Would highly recommend!
